St. Patrick’s Day — which is only a few days away — is a great occasion for a party. And for spa lovers, it’s understandable you might want to turn your hot tub green.

If you own a relatively new hot tub, turning your spa water green can be as easy as pushing a few buttons on the control panel.

For example, with both the Aspen Spas and Bullfrog Spas we sell, the steps for changing color is this simple:

— tap the “light” button on your control panel and continuing tapping to move from color to color, or

— if using a touchscreen controller, choose the light setting’s color wheel and simply drag to the color you want — in this case green.

If you have an older hot tub without the latest LED technology, or if you want more details on using a control panel, see further in this blog for more ideas.

How NOT To Turn a Hot Tub Green

Chicago River, St. Patrick’s Day

Chicago River, St. Patrick’s Day

We strongly advise against filling your hot tub with beer or tinting it green with food coloring.

For one thing, it would require too much food coloring to tint it, which in turn would be extremely difficult to filter out of the spa’s systems.

Before you say, well, in Illinois, they turn the whole Chicago River green for St. Patrick’s Day, why can’t we do that for a single hot tub?

Alas, the parade organizer who came up with a formula for turning the water green without harming or polluting the river has kept his special formula top-secret. He’s been quoted as saying that revealing his secret was akin to, “telling where the leprechaun hides its gold.”

As for adding beer to your spa, you really don’t want to be absorbing all that alcohol through your pours. In addition to serious intoxication, alcohol absorbed this way can affect sensitive parts of the body in very unpleasant ways.

We highly recommendsaving any intake of alcohol until after you and your friends are out of the tub. That’s the time for the green beer!

Floating LED lights, with waterproof seals in non-corrosive materials, say manufacturers, are available online.

However, if you’re fortunate to have a Bullfrog Spa, you’re ready to go right now. Every Bullfrog Spa model comes with an interior lighting package that will turn your spa green with the push of a button.

Our A Series, R Series and STIL spas each feature a premium interior lighting package with lighted water feature, filter area and center logo light to enhance your nighttime spa experience.

A Series spas additionally feature lighted cup holders and surround lighting to set just the right mood.

According to our own Bill Renter, “All you need do is just press the light button on the control panel on and off [left], and it scrolls through all the light colors you could want.

“As you press the buttons it will change the color of the light, so it’s easy to see where you are. You can even choose the level of lighting, including a strobe light option if you really want it to feel like party central.”

And, if you have opted for Bullfrog’s M Series, those models include In-Seat Multi-Function Control Centers that allow you to control all jetting, activate lighting, control push-button water features, and even regulate the volume of the M Series hidden speaker audio system, all without having to move from your favorite spa seat (above right).

So, if you’ve got a Bullfrog or Aspen Spa  we can say with no blarney: Green is a good color on you!

Note: Our feature photo at the top of the page was provided to us by one of our clients. He and his partner opted for an automated cover with their Bullfrog Spa, which boasts interior lighting as well — talk about party central!
