It doesn’t matter if the patio or deck you’re planning is an upgrade or you’re starting from scratch, this is the perfect time to add that portable hot tub you’ve been thinking about.

Here’s why:

Designing Your Deck or Patio

By adding your hot tub during the deck/patio design stage, the finished project will appear as one harmonious whole. Hot tubs come in a variety of sizes, as well as squares and rounds, so you can choose the perfect one to fit your overall taste, and design plans.

In fact, the entire project can be put together so as to blend with your home’s overall architecture, as well as your property’s terrain and views.

Go Elaborate or Go Simple

Depending on how big you want to go, you can inset your hot tub within materials that match your patio or deck, or you can simply shape the deck or patio to allow for nestling the hot tub into them.

Landscaping

While you’re at it, this is a great time to have your design/build firm incorporate some multi-seasonal plantings as perfect finishing touches. Of course, if your budget allows, you can also add a waterfall or other water feature.

One final thought. We may be a hot tub company, but Best Hot Tubs works closely with all the experts you need for a complete backyard retreat. Indeed, you can even begin by choosing the hot tub you want and work outward from there.

Choosing the Right Design

When it comes to choosing your hot tub, you can’t go wrong with any of Bullfrog Spas’ models: the STIL  if you love elegant temporary design, the X if want the benefits of Bullfrog’s hydrotherapy at a great price point, our R  and A series — that both emphasize comfort and great looks.

And there’s also Bullfrog’s SportX 151R. This spa is round in shape and is reminiscent of the Japanese ofuro as well as the classic California redwood tubs.

By designing an elevated patio, it was easy to nestle the clients new Bullfrog Spa into the patio’s planned cutout. These homeowners chose a dark brown case for their hot tub that picks up the deep tone of their sloping roof. Together, these dark elements present a dramatic contrast to a light deck and furniture cushion materials. A very simple design on the stairs makes them stand out visually without being a distraction. Indeed, none of the hot-tub-patio elements were complicated, yet the overall effect is an enticing and serene space.

For this project, the design called for sinking a Bullfrog Spa halfway into the ground, surrounded by boulders and flowering plantings. We also installed their new hot tub next to the new Techo-Bloc patio our friends at The Deck and Patio Company designed/built, giving the spa a “set in garden” appearance. A stream with waterfalls were also added. These flow into an Aquascape Inc. “pondless” reservoir — alongside the hot tub. The waterfall and stream were positioned to be viewed from both the home’s kitchen window as well as the hot tub.

Again, a raised patio was designed for fitting one of our Bullfrog Spas against it. This also makes it easy to access the hot tub’s plumbing. Note that an outdoor kitchen was also part of the design package; the patio also accommodated a dining/lounge area. Upshot? When these clients go outside, they stay outside.

Curved Deck with Hot Tub:

The wonderful thing about planning your deck/patio and hot tub together is you can express your taste in a harmonious way. Here a traditional round spa is fitted into the curves in the deck. The handsome use of wood with the round spa also hints at traditional Japanese ofuros for a Zen-like appeal. Note how the hot tub case is made of the same decking material.

Best Hot Tubs is expert at positioning a spa to take full advantage of any property views — be they waterside or near a robust woodland or flower bed. By adding stepping stones across the lawn, this project connected the water views, deck and hot tub to the backdoor.

Trex Deck with Spa:

These clients had a small yard with no room for a pool, but that didn’t stop them from having a water feature: a portable spa. We set their new hot tub on a platform against a new two-level deck and left the lower area untouched so they still have their lawn space. The decking is Trex, in a light taupe “Rope Swing” color. The Trex white railing extends the cool and relaxed atmosphere of the home’s white exterior. (See additional photo below.)

This is the same project as immediately above. It includes an outdoor kitchen with all-fireproof metal studs, an acrylic stucco finish, Napoleon Grill, Supercast concrete countertop, refrigerator, and on-board entertainment center with satellite radio and a dock for their iPods. As you can imagine, these clients truly enjoy outdoor living even in a small yard.
