Last week’s blog focused on: Whether or not permits are required for a hot tub, if hot tubs are difficult to deliver, and if a licensed electrician is essential when installing them.

This week, we are addressing another frequently asked question:

What Plumbing Is Required for a Hot Tub?

As you know, Best Hot Tubs specializes in Bullfrog Spas, so this is a very easy answer for us. If you have a standard garden hose, that’s all the special equipment you’ll need to fill (and eventually drain) your hot tub.

Click here for a video that shows how easy it is to fill/drain a hot tub. Note: We made the video before our name change to Best Hot Tubs. (We were previously called Long Island Hot Tub.) But only our name changed — the easy filling process remains exactly the same.

On top of its easy hookup, there isn’t a lot of complicated plumbing going on inside any of Bullfrog Spas models.Their creative design has eliminated most (80%) of a traditional spa’s plumbing, with much of the plumbing located behind Bullfrog’s massage jets. This provides a more efficient and reliable water delivery system to power the jet massages.

Despite Bullfrog’s plumbing simplicity, you still need to install your hot tub so as to ensure access to it for any future repairs. Also, if your yard has or develops any drainage problems that might affect your hot tub’s plumbing, Best Hot Tubs can remove the base’s plumbing (a real easy job for Bullfrog Spas) and run the equipment to an above-ground location where it won’t get damaged and can be easily accessed.

What does this mean for you when installing a hot tub? You won’t require any extra special plumbing materials for a standard Bullfrog hot tub installation. To fill your hot tub (which should be done immediately upon being unwrapped), all you will need is a garden hose to add water.

Warning: Do not turn the spa’s power on until after you’ve filled it. If you have other questions you can speak with our experts at each of our Best Hot Tubs locations: Windham, Farmingdale and Westbury, NY. or review your spa’s manual.

Most of the system that delivers the water in the spa is contained within the proprietary H2Air Manifold on the JetPak, which is submerged in the hot water. Therefore the heat from the JetPak’s modular seat is transported directly into the hot tub water and is not lost to the colder weather outside. Great idea, yes?  (Photo: Bullfrog Spas)

Portable Spa Plumbing:

Portable Spa Plumbing:

Being self-contained, a spa unit has all it needs inside itself. However, rain needs to be able to drain away from the tub. If not, its modest plumbing could be damaged. Plus, the plumbing needs to be accessible for any future repairs. Be it because of drainage problems or your desire to recess your hot tub, Best Hot Tubs can remove the plumbing (an easy job for Bullfrog Spas) and run the equipment to an above-ground location where it won’t get damaged.

A key first step is to turn off the power at the breaker. If filling it, just put your hose into the hot tub. When draining your hot tub, find the drain (usually located on the right side of the base), pull it out, turn it clockwise and remove the drain cap, then attach a standard garden hose. Be sure to have located the end of the hose somewhere in your yard that can absorb the draining water. That’s all there is to it.  (Photo: Bullfrog Spas)
