When you consider what’s involved in adding a custom in-ground gunite spa, a portable hot tub is amazingly easy to install. And while it is not unusual to simply hook up one of our portable Bullfrog Spas without any adornment or fuss, many of our clients do want their new hot tub to have an attractive custom setting.

One of the most popular custom installations they opt for is the “set-in-garden” look. Indeed, the project we’re highlighting today is of our most popular downloads/saves on social media. Of course, a hot tub set-in-garden look can vary a bit in design and layout, but they all include similarities: soil, moss rock boulders and plants.

The result of this special installation is one gets to enjoy a relaxing tranquil soak in a beautiful garden-like atmosphere. In addition, moss rock can even be used to create natural steps up to the hot tub. This adds to the “zen” feeling of it all.

You might wonder if Best Hot Tubs does these custom installation ourselves. Actually, in most cases, we work closely with local contractors. But it is important to note that Best Hot Tubs owner, Bill Renter, owned a well-known Long Island landscaping firm for over 30 years. His knowledge of what’s required for this type of special installation, as well as other more challenging designs, is why many people choose to come to Best Hot Tubs.

“I continue to work closely with landscaping designers for a variety of hot tub installations,” says Bill. “It certainly is helpful that I know exactly what is required, no matter how complicated the clients’ requests are — including in this case, the proper plantings and rocks that create a perfect set-in-garden design.”

Initially, the owners simply asked that their spa be positioned at the edge of their patio. Then they realized they wanted it spruced up a bit.

After they decided on a “set-in-garden” surround for their new hot tub, the process of creating an idyllic setting began. Here soil and moss rock, as well as some initial plantings, have already been placed around the hot tub.

Bright plantings were added as finishing touches to create the perfect set-in-garden look. Before adding the soil and other elements, we installed concrete block retaining walls on 3 sides of the hot tub. The back side was left open for access to pumps and equipment.

A hot tub filled with water can weigh two tons, so letting Mother Earth bear the entire burden can be the best of both worlds —aesthetically beautiful and practical — and from any angle.
